How often should you visit the dentist and have dental check-up?

Why regular dental visits matter

Your mouth is full of bacteria, and while daily brushing and flossing help keep most of it under control, professional cleanings and exams do even more. Routine visits allow your dentist to:

  • Remove hardened plaque (tartar) that can’t be brushed away
  • Catch cavities before they grow larger and become painful
  • Spot early signs of gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss if untreated
  • Check for signs of oral cancer or other serious conditions

Visiting your dentist regularly isn’t just about your smile—it’s also about protecting your overall health.

The general rule: Every 6 months

For most people, visiting the dentist every six months is the gold standard. That’s why you’ll often hear the phrase “twice a year.” This schedule allows your dental team to keep your teeth clean and monitor for issues before they turn into bigger (and more expensive) problems.

But it’s not one-size-fits-all

While twice a year is typical, it’s not universal. Some patients may need to come more or less frequently based on individual needs. For example:

  • If you have a history of gum disease, your dentist may recommend visits every 3-4 months to prevent flare-ups and to keep on top of things.
  • If you’re prone to cavities, more frequent cleanings can help keep decay at bay or allow your dentist to catch it early.
  • If you have excellent oral health, your dentist might suggest stretching it to every 9-12 months—though this is less common.

Pregnant women, smokers, diabetics, and people with weakened immune systems might also benefit from more frequent visits. It all depends on your personal risk factors.

What about children and dental check-up?

Children should typically start seeing the dentist by age one or within six months of their first tooth coming in. From there, visits every six months help keep little teeth healthy, catch issues early, and teach good habits that last a lifetime.

Why waiting until it hurts is a mistake

One of the biggest dental myths is that if nothing hurts, there’s no problem. Unfortunately, many dental problems don’t cause pain until they’re advanced. Cavities can grow for months (or even years) without obvious symptoms. Gum disease is often silent until it’s already caused significant damage.

By the time you feel pain, treatment is usually more extensive and expensive. Routine exams and cleanings are a simple, cost-effective way to avoid that.

Bottom line: your dentist knows best

While “every six months” is a great rule of thumb, the best schedule is the one customized for you. During your next visit, ask us how often you should come in based on your unique needs.

Just moved to the area, I chose Willows Dental Surgery because of the reviews and I can certainly say Willows lives up to all of them. Massive thank you to Stephanie and Yolanda for making me feel at ease and making the whole experience extremely comfortable.

I’ve been coming to this practice and the three predecessor practices at this address for over 55 years. Caring, thoughtful and excellent treatment. Don’t bother going anywhere else.

I've been a client at Willows for over 10 years and have been very happy with the service I have received. I've not been blessed with good teeth and have had to have a reasonable amount of work on them but I'm very confident that Filip and his team only do work that is necessary and charge a fair price for the work. Filips approach is to tackle problems carefully and not to make big decisions without thinking through and discussing the options with clients. Thankfully this has left me with teath in much better shape than I would reasonably have expected at this stage in my life! Thank you Filip & Team 🙏

Excellent dentist. Super friendly, great work, no problems at all. The best I’ve tried in Wycombe.

I've been a patient at this practice for over 30 years, and the quality of care has only improved over time. My previous dentist was highly skilled and always produced neat, precise work. Since they left a couple of years ago, I've been seeing a new dentist who is truly exceptional—offering excellent advice, a steady hand, and incredibly tidy, professional results. The whole team is friendly, knowledgeable, and focused on patient care. I wouldn't go anywhere else. This level of care and professionalism is what you'd hope for from any dental practice—but in reality, it's not always delivered, which makes this team stand out even more.

Great hygienist, very friendly staff and lovely practice!

Been coming here for dentist and hygienist appointments since I was a kid. Staff are always lovely and the decor is warm yet professional. There is limited free customer parking but I nearly always get a space. I've moved further away now but always make the effort to come here specifically. The dentist changed recently, but still the same standard of care. Will keep coming back for as long as I can.

My care and treatment at The Willows has always been second to none since my first visit in 2021 after being recommended by a friend and I’ve never looked back. All the staff are so helpful and welcoming and I always feel so well looked after. Treatment is very fairly priced with all options explained clearly. Thank you to the whole team, especially Helen, Neelam, Yolanda, Karen and Stephanie!

Fantastic dental practice. I’ve never been the best with dentists due to bad experiences elsewhere, but the team here was incredibly welcoming and completely alleviated my concerns. They were transparent from the start, clearly explaining their treatment approach and associated costs.I had two premolars in pretty poor shape that had been causing me constant pain for a long time. My previous dentist had advised removing them, which would’ve left me with large, visible gaps. After just a couple of appointments with Ilija and Kaz, both teeth are now in great condition. Ilija was extremely thorough and he kept me informed every step of the way. The entire experience was genuinely positive, Ilija even engaged with my very inquisitive 3-year-old, who now probably wants to be a dentist himself!A truly stress-free experience with a lovely team.
