Gum disease, Bleeding gums
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a very common condition that affects over half of all adults. It is caused by bacteria that form plaque on the surface of the teeth, which can then harden into tartar if left untreated, affecting the gums and bone around the teeth.
Gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums, is an early stage of gum disease which is reversible. Some early signs of gum disease include:
- Red, swollen gums
- Bleeding gums
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- And more
Preventative measures can be simple: brushing twice a day with an electric toothbrush, daily flossing or using interdental brushes in-between your teeth, having regular dental check-ups, visiting the hygienist regularly, and not smoking.
If gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which can cause destruction of your underlying jawbone, leading to possible tooth loss and increased risk of other health problems.
If you are diagnosed with periodontal disease, the main treatments are usually preventative in the first instance, such as deep cleaning, scaling, and sometimes antibiotics to treat gum infections. If your periodontal problem is more serious, surgical treatment may be required.
