In some instances, your dentist may recommend an indirect restoration. This typically occurs if the cavities in the teeth are very large, if a tooth has fractured (possibly due to a crack), or after a root canal treatment to prevent the tooth from fracturing.
Ceramic/porcelain restorations are made in the lab based on a model of your teeth taken at the first stage appointment. They are then cemented directly to the teeth at a subsequent visit. These restorations may include dental crowns, onlays, inlays, and overlays, and ultimately, they are used to provide strength and stability to the original tooth structure. In most instances, they will also improve the way a tooth appears cosmetically.
