Could Bleeding Gums Affect Your Heart Health?

When most people think about gum disease, they think about bleeding gums, bad breath or loose teeth. But did you know that your gum health may also be connected to your general health — including your heart?

Your mouth is not separate from the rest of your body. The bacteria and inflammation caused by advanced gum disease, known as periodontitis, may have an effect beyond your teeth and gums.

What is periodontitis?

Periodontitis is a more serious form of gum disease. It usually starts when plaque bacteria build up around the teeth and gums. If this is not cleaned properly, the gums can become inflamed.

Over time, this inflammation can damage the tissues and bone that hold your teeth in place.

You may have gum disease if you notice:

  • Bleeding when brushing or flossing
  • Swollen, red or sore gums
  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Gums pulling away from the teeth
  • Loose teeth
  • A change in how your teeth bite together

Bleeding gums are common, but they are not normal. They are often your body’s way of telling you that something needs attention.

What is the link between gum disease and heart disease?

Research has shown that people with periodontitis are more likely to also have cardiovascular problems, such as heart disease.

This does not mean that gum disease definitely causes heart disease. However, long-term gum inflammation may add extra stress to the body. Bacteria from infected gums may also enter the bloodstream, especially when gums bleed.

This is one reason why dentists now look at gum health as part of your wider wellbeing, not just your smile.

Why should patients take gum disease seriously?

Gum disease can be painless for a long time. Many patients do not realise they have a problem until the condition has already become more advanced.

The good news is that gum disease can often be managed, especially when it is diagnosed early. Regular dental check-ups allow your dentist to check your gums, measure gum pockets and spot early signs before they become more serious.

Looking after your gums may help you:

  • Keep your teeth for longer
  • Reduce bleeding and inflammation
  • Improve your breath
  • Support your general health
  • Feel more confident about your smile

Simple ways to protect your gums

Small daily habits can make a big difference.

To help protect your gums:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
  • Clean between your teeth every day using interdental brushes or floss
  • Attend regular dental check-ups
  • See the hygienist if recommended
  • Stop smoking, as smoking greatly increases the risk of gum disease
  • Keep diabetes and other health conditions well controlled
  • Tell your dentist about any heart condition or regular medication

Do heart patients need antibiotics before dental treatment?

Some patients with certain heart conditions may be at higher risk of a rare but serious infection called infective endocarditis.

In the UK, antibiotics before dental treatment are not given routinely to everyone. However, if you have a heart condition, a replacement heart valve, previous infective endocarditis, or complex congenital heart disease, it is important to tell your dentist before treatment.

Your dental team can then follow the latest UK guidance and discuss the safest approach with you.

You can read the current UK guidance here: SDCEP Antibiotic Prophylaxis Against Infective Endocarditis guidance.

When should you book an appointment?

Please book a dental appointment if your gums bleed, feel swollen, look red, or if you have persistent, bad breath or loose teeth.

Bleeding gums are not something to ignore. Early advice and treatment can help protect your smile — and may support your overall health too.

At Willows Dental Surgery, we are here to help you look after your teeth, gums and general wellbeing in a calm and friendly environment.

Just moved to the area, I chose Willows Dental Surgery because of the reviews and I can certainly say Willows lives up to all of them. Massive thank you to Stephanie and Yolanda for making me feel at ease and making the whole experience extremely comfortable.

I’ve been coming to this practice and the three predecessor practices at this address for over 55 years. Caring, thoughtful and excellent treatment. Don’t bother going anywhere else.

I've been a client at Willows for over 10 years and have been very happy with the service I have received. I've not been blessed with good teeth and have had to have a reasonable amount of work on them but I'm very confident that Filip and his team only do work that is necessary and charge a fair price for the work. Filips approach is to tackle problems carefully and not to make big decisions without thinking through and discussing the options with clients. Thankfully this has left me with teath in much better shape than I would reasonably have expected at this stage in my life! Thank you Filip & Team 🙏

Excellent dentist. Super friendly, great work, no problems at all. The best I’ve tried in Wycombe.

I've been a patient at this practice for over 30 years, and the quality of care has only improved over time. My previous dentist was highly skilled and always produced neat, precise work. Since they left a couple of years ago, I've been seeing a new dentist who is truly exceptional—offering excellent advice, a steady hand, and incredibly tidy, professional results. The whole team is friendly, knowledgeable, and focused on patient care. I wouldn't go anywhere else. This level of care and professionalism is what you'd hope for from any dental practice—but in reality, it's not always delivered, which makes this team stand out even more.

Been coming here for dentist and hygienist appointments since I was a kid. Staff are always lovely and the decor is warm yet professional. There is limited free customer parking but I nearly always get a space. I've moved further away now but always make the effort to come here specifically. The dentist changed recently, but still the same standard of care. Will keep coming back for as long as I can.

My care and treatment at The Willows has always been second to none since my first visit in 2021 after being recommended by a friend and I’ve never looked back. All the staff are so helpful and welcoming and I always feel so well looked after. Treatment is very fairly priced with all options explained clearly. Thank you to the whole team, especially Helen, Neelam, Yolanda, Karen and Stephanie!

Fantastic dental practice. I’ve never been the best with dentists due to bad experiences elsewhere, but the team here was incredibly welcoming and completely alleviated my concerns. They were transparent from the start, clearly explaining their treatment approach and associated costs.I had two premolars in pretty poor shape that had been causing me constant pain for a long time. My previous dentist had advised removing them, which would’ve left me with large, visible gaps. After just a couple of appointments with Ilija and Kaz, both teeth are now in great condition. Ilija was extremely thorough and he kept me informed every step of the way. The entire experience was genuinely positive, Ilija even engaged with my very inquisitive 3-year-old, who now probably wants to be a dentist himself!A truly stress-free experience with a lovely team.
